Catering Establishment Act 1958

This act indents to provide for the regulation of conditions of work in Catering Establishments, Hotels and Restaurants.
All the Catering Establishments should be registered under the act and License to be obtained from the Labour Authorities which is renewable every year.

The Act provides relevant provision for daily and weekly hours of work, extra wages for Over time interval for rest, Spread over, Holiday, Notice of Period of work, Leave with wages, Prohibition of employment of Children, engagement of women during night, Notice of discharge or dismissal etc.

The inspectors appointed under this act visit the catering establishments inspect the working condiction, welfare of employees and verify the registers and records maintained by the employer.

Employer should submit Annual Return on or before 31st January to the authorities concerned and maintain register of wages, wage slip, register of advances and damages and display abstract in the notice board. Notice of Period of Work should also be display in the notice board.

The act provides relevant provisions for medical examinations prior to employment, ascertainment of age, periodical medical examination of employees, reporting of illnes of employees to the health officer, dress and uniforms, food for the shift.
Employers contravening any of the provisions of the act or fails to pay wages shall be punishable with fine or imprisonment
